5 top tips for cleaning & maintaining glass splashbacks

Glass splashbacks are an extremely popular option in modern kitchens. Not only for their low maintenance design and longevity, but for the illusion of giving a bigger sense of space. They do however need to be cleaned in a slightly different approach than the usual splashback styles. Read on to find out our top tips on how to keep them – and your kitchen looking their very best.

1 – Find the right tool!

Using the wrong type of cloth or tool such as metal or plastic based cleaning tools could scratch your splashback. Avoid using a scrubbing motion and opt for a microfibre cloth that is lint-free to leave your splashbacks nice and shiny!

2  – What cleaning products should I use?

Kitchen splashbacks get grimy in numerous ways, as well as food you’ll be contending with dirt and grease. A normal glass cleaner may be fine for the majority of marks on your splashback but it may not be able to cut through grease. In which case it is recommended to use hot soapy water. Top Tip:  don’t use any abrasive cleaners! Abrasive products can cause tiny grooves in your glass, which, overtime will actually increase dirt build up, make it harder to clean and will make your splashback blurry and dull.

3  – Regularly clean!

This may sound obvious, but regularly cleaning your splashback will help stop build up of dirt and grime. Also it prevents you from scrubbing the splashback which will cause damage. It’s recommended to thoroughly clean your splashback every 2 weeks.

4  – How do I remove scorch marks and streaks?

Both of these methods are cheap, homemade, and effective, win, win! For scorch marks, mix one part white vinegar and one part lemon juice. Mix into a spray bottle or apply it manually. Leave the solution for 10 minutes then simply wipe off with a microfibre cloth. To get rid of streaks, use a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and water. Simply put on a cloth and wipe, no need to rinse.

5  – No cleaning in direct sunlight.

When the sun is shining into your kitchen, you may notice steaks or marks on your splashback that you will be tempted to clean. Try to avoid this as the cleaning solution will dry too fast, causing your splashback to look dull, more streaky and could even stain it. Wait for direct sunlight to move before cleaning.
